Why is my water white?

A few months back, I opened the tap in my kitchen and the water gushing out was pure white - so white that you could hold it upto the skin of my red-haired buddy and you wouldnt know which is which! I noticed that after a few seconds, the water would 'settle' and the white color would fade out and the water would look normal again!

Then, suddenly the water stopped being white and all was OK, until today...

Now the water is white again - I still drink it, never-the-less or whatever and I am still alive (I think).

Is there something I need to do to stop this from happening and what causes this? Its only in the kitchen ... not in the bathroom!

Thanks :)

It used to be like that when I was growing up in a high chalk area.
  • Milky white tap water that clears could be due to dissolved air. Have a look at www [dot] unitedutilities [dot] com [slash] Whitewater [dot] htm. If you are in any dobut about the safety of your water contact your water company and ask for it to be tested.

We had this since we moved into our house a year ago. It's really cloudy water, that turns clear after 5 minutes. I googled on water board websites I found that if the water turns clear as mine did then it's just air.

However, we changed our kitchen taps this week and no more cloudy water! So I wonder if it's something in the tap that was causing the air?
  • As metioned above, it's more than likely tiny air bubbles.
If you fill a glass and leave it to stand it will slowy turn clear from the bottom upwards as the air escapes.

    yep as stated its air
don't know what causes it as we get it intermittently (West London so not chalk related!) but it was so bad one summer that the water company sent a letter out in response to complaints to say it has no impact on the safety or quality of the water

We get this at campsites a lot ,its just due to aeration ,it 'settles' because the bubbles disperse. I couldnt believe it was air the first few times as the water looked just like milk ,couldnt see bubbles or air ,but thats what it is :)

I had this a while ago and the water company told me they had just flushed through some main supply pipes and although the water looked 'wrong' it was perfectly safe to drink. I'm still here ;)
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
