You could try moving the location of the PST file to USB drive, and then you would just need to just plug it into whichever computer you are using.
This was something I had considered, if I mapped the usb drive to the same letter on both machines so that when it was attached it always went to the same path it should meet my needs.
Alternatively you could store the file on the network HDD, and use Live Mesh to access the file (although you'd need to use a "magic packet" to wake it up).
When I am away it can be for 2-3 months at a time and I switch off everything at home, pc, router, etc. My connection when away is either unsecured (free wi-fi) or dial up so trying to search for things from that source would not be ideal.
Live mesh is a Microsoft product which is currently in Beta, but works really well. I've been using it for about 6 months woth no problems. It's similar to Logmein, except that you can copy files across the network, which you can only do with Logmein if you have the paid version. I have a desktop in my downstairs office, and if I'm using the laptop upstairs I use this to access my desktop etc
Information on Live Mesh is here
Can't you copy files across your network if you give yourself read/write pw secured access?

Just a thought but I use Outlook 2003 and my mail account is with Googlemail. With Googlemail I can log on to the web mail and see all my Sent Items, I can currently access mail more than two years old which no longer appears in Outlook. This may help?0

Absolutely, but the difference with Live Mesh is that you can actually acces your pc, and the applications. For example, I have my Outlook pst stored on my main desktop, but I have another copy of Outlook installed on my laptop and the location is mapped to my desktop, so if my pc is running I can open Outlook on my laptop and it saves the file back there. If for any reason I have left Outlook running on my desktop, the laptop version can't open it. I can log in through Live Mesh, access Outlook on my desktop as though I was sat there and close it down.
Normally I use a magic packet (WakeOnLan) to open my desktop, and when I've finished I login through Live Mesh and turn my desktop off. A very handy piece of software.0 -
I agree, but would it fit my requirements if I switch off desktop while away??

I found this link re using a 16gb usb stick with a HD Formatted on it.
I have a Sandisk cruzer 16gb stick set up like this, and would certainly be more portable than even my small wirelss usb drive.
Any opinions please.

A few people have suggested accessing your email using imap instead of POP - I can't see you acknowledge or dismiss this. It will do exactly what you want.0

This unless I mis-understood the write up leaves a copy on the server. So would need web access to refer to old mails. My problem is slow or no access at times, but would want information from mails or email addresses off line to then send when on-line.Just a thought but I use Outlook 2003 and my mail account is with Googlemail. The same for this, and though I have a googlemail address I have others too.
