Is now the right time to try to negotiate a completion date?

The situation is that first time buyers are buying our house, and we are going to rent for a bit before again.

Therefore, the chain starts with them, and ends with us.

The survey has been done, and came back ok. We have submitted the fixtures and fittings and property details forms to their solicitor.

We are just waiting now for them to pay for their searches, and then we can exchange contracts and complete.

Is now a good time for our solicitor to try to negotiate with their solicitor a target completion date?

My advice to you is to relax and let things run their course. Your solicitors will do all this between themselves and you should only really have to interfere if you are disatisfed with their service.

  • My advice is to look well ahead and if there is ANY likelihood of certain dates needing to be avoided then announce then now.

Because of work commitments I announced several months ahead, dates I could not complete on.

Don't try & set a completion date yet, there are to many variables involved to be able to set a date. As icecollbabe says, let everyone involved know what dates you can't do as early as possible.

I've had buyers & sellers agree dates between them without speaking to solicitors, some have even gone as far as booking removals etc, when it didn't happen on the date they agreed, all hell broke loose and the chain nearly collapsed as a result of the animosity that resulted. Stay flexible when it comes to completion dates.

Also it might be cheaper with removals etc if you don't complete on a Friday. I always try to complete on a Thursday, money goes thru the system a lot quicker, removals are cheaper & more flexible & if theres any problems I have the Friday to speak to solicitors, utility companies, tradesman etc, completing on a Friday means I have to wait until the Monday if there is a problem.
