which are the best cheap chopped tomatoes?

I'm having trouble finding some decent cheap chopped tomatoes - tesco's just seem too watery and Sainsbury's too sugary. Any suggestions?

Find the Asian section in your Tesco - usually the tins of pulses and tomatoes are the same price or less than Tesco Value and I think the tomatoes are better quality.

I know you mentioned Sainsbury's being too sugary but I do find them so much thicker and with less water than other brands so thats what I use. The sugar is not an issue as I always add a little sugar to a savoury dish anyway, little chefs tip!
  • Definitely go for plum tomatoes and chop them up. Also, you can remove the hard bits at the top of each one which is already in the chopped ones - yuck
  • I noticed you didn't like Tesco. However, I do like their tinned tomatoes with garlic and olive oil. (It came first in poll in the Grocer lately).

Sainsbury's basics chopped are what we use - don't get the sugary - they are pure toms, no added sugar in there at all  Cheapest we have found around here (but then we don't have a load of choice really...) and yum yummy - they're only tomatoes after all :)

Tesco have Napolina chopped toms at half price - they are reckoned to be good and I like them. I did but Cirio brand somewhere - can't remember where and they were cheap but very good!

Aldi plum tomatoes at about 37p a can. As good quality as Napolina. Don't like chopped as they tend to leave in the top bit. Cook them slowly and they break u0p on their own during cooking.

Ditto. We now don't even search for special offers on brand name toms any more. Waste of time, we know that 35p gets us a very decent tin of chopped toms, no messing.
