My first house and some of my electricity problems...

Hi there
I apologise in advance because this could be a lengthy post!
I am a student currently doing a year in industry. I've had to move out of my student halls and get a flat in a town near to where i work.
After collecting my keys etc from the estate agent, the estate anget told me all the relavant details eg electricity readings, suppliers etc were in the welcome pack. When i got back to the flat i had a flick through and couldnt find any of the details. After a phone call i was told that he would get in touch with me over the next few days to tell me the meter readings - i found this strange because he told me that he had been to read the meters on the day of me collecting my keys.
After many emails, phone calls and visiting in person i eventually got a meter reading for the electricity - 4 weeks in. I got told this week - the 6th week -that my water reading was 482 and with yorkshire water, however when i checked my meter it was on 462 - after living here for 6 weeks! I have now found out that this was an estimation by the water company,
It also turns out that i have 'no electricity supplier' which is strange because i have had electricity in the house for the whole of the stay.
I am seriously confused anddon't know what is the best thing to do...I have given up with the estate agent because he seems the biggest waste of time.
Has anyone got any ideas on what i should do? :S
Thanks!

Read all your meters immediately and photo them with the days newspaper in the shot or get the lettings agent around to read at the same time so the lettings agent can tell the previous oppupiers the readings.
Then find out who the current suppliers are and get in contact with them pronto with the readings so you do not get charged for the previous occupiers utilities.0 -
The ingoing meter readings were hopefully on the inventory you agreed to when you accepted the keys.
Accepting keys remote from the property without agreeing the inventory with the landlord or his agent is not good practise. Doesn't your university have a housing office that gives advice to students about every aspect of housing? I'd be surprised if they didn't. Speak to them today!
Anyway, as your agreed start water meter reading is in excess of what it currently records, it sounds like you've got a few free units
Regarding electricity, you will have a supplier.
Even in the unlikely event that the site is deemed a shipperless site, whichever supplier you choose will have the right to bill you for all electricty you have consumed.
Details here on how to establish your existing electricity supplier (or otherwise confirm it is a shipperless site)
