Options
Hi we want to get my Sister a laptop for uni. We are stuck between a

Dell Inspiron 510M

Pentium 1.4ghz
512mb RAM
40gb HD
15" TFT
DVD RW
£641 inc vat

Or a

TOSHIBA EQUIUM A60-155

Celerom 2.8ghz
256mb RAM
40gb HD
DVD RW
15"TFT

£599 inc vat

both have similar software, video, audio etc.

I reckon Toshiba is a better make than Dell.

Please help!!!

Try looking for an ACER laptop at https://www.comet.co.uk and compare the specs, you may have a pleasant surprise.

I have a dell desktop. Their service used to be great when they had the call centre in Ireland. After they moved it to India I could get no satisfaction from them at all. They may have improved but it put me off them for good.

Caution with Acer - well known for problems with the case splitting round the screen hinge area. In my opinion you wont go wrong with the Toshiba.

Can't comment on the Dell machines but in my last job (I'm an Industrial Electrical Engineer) I had a Toshiba laptop for 5 years.

It was bumped, banged, and "abused" daily in a very, very dusty environment. To its credit it NEVER let me down.

When I moved to my new job 2 years ago, they gave me a HP (Compaq?) laptop, and this machine already has a problem with the left mouse pad button.

Given the choice I would buy Toshiba every time.

I bought a Dell Inspiron for work about 18 months ago. From day 1 it's been incredibly slow (it's a Celeron, so it might be that, but the Dell desktop I use at home is also very unreliable). To cap it all Dell never honoured the £100 cashback deal that came with the laptop. I've heard only good things about Toshiba laptops.0
  • i am a laptop virgin but am well impressed with my toshiba
