Hi all.
I am getting broadband on Tuesday and have been advised to make sure that my Firewall is up to date as the connection is always open.
The thing is, now that I am a stay at home mum with a new baby I can't really afford to get it updated and I know that the virus and firewall thing could do with updating. I have used Zone Alarm before but wasn't sure as to how good it actually was. I also used AVG Virus wotsite and have heard that no matter whether was PC was clean when you ran a scan it would always say that it had found a virus and that it couldn't delete it just so that you would upgrade.
What do you think. Are these free things good enough, is there better or should I save some pennies and bite the bullet and just go and update McAffee

AVG is fine, i have used it for years and never had any problems with the free one

there is also a free firewall from Sygate that you can use

I'm using Windows Me. Sygate never heard of that. Is that better than the ones I've mentioned?TopCashback £1792.63My Little World0

How are you connecting, routers often have built in firewalls..0

Sygate is useful in case you go wireless in the future, it supports that while zonealarm does not
passes all the firewall tests I throw at itEx forum ambassador

Hello again Tony,
How am I connecting routers???? I take it thats the little box thing I received today? They called it a modem - is that the same thing errrr sorry for being thick here.
I won't be going wireless as that is just more technical stuff I would need to learn about. I will go and find the sygate website to have a gander at.TopCashback £1792.63My Little World0 -
A modem isn't a router so it doesn't offer you the same protection as regards intrusion attempts. I would presume that you have a modem; most ISP's give these out free although I seem to recall that BT did, maybe still do, give out routers.
Anyway as regards AVG I've been using that for friends and family for many years with no problems, just remember to keep it upto date when prompted.
As regards firewalls I install Zonealarm if someone wants a freebie otherwise I go for Norton Internet Security, my preference there others will/may prefer McCaffe.0 -
I think I will look into either the Sygate thing, Zone Alarm and see how much I can Get a new version of McAffee for.
Thanks for all your help guysTopCashback £1792.63My Little World0
