After your very helpful answers yesterday we have now decided that this may be the best laptop for my mum and we shall buy Office 2007 for her as an early birthday present so this is now within budget.

Acers Direct are part of same company as Laptops Direct (called Buy it Direct). I personally had bad experiences of using Laptops Direct this week, e.g. taking money for a product they haven't actually got and then 3 days running promising that it is just a about to be despatched, before finally telling me they didn't have it after all. However, others say they have had painless transactions with them.0 -
I thought they were the same company, I presume they're all much of a likeness?!
Is it worth purchasing the extra warranty? Don't really bother with them myself but just wondering if it's value for money and worth it for my mum....?0 -
There have been a few threads here mentioning issues with Acer.
The biggest one is that they put a (hidden) recovery partition on your disk instead of giving you original install media, and that can get corrupted, leaving you with a dead system unless you pay extra for physical media.
I have a nightmare trying to repair one once, and I could not recommend the brand based on that experience.0 -
Acer aren't the only ones that do that, Dell do it, most of the big name brands do now. Its cheaper.0

I know I had probems with my old acer as I didn't have the original discs, which I thought was because I bought it second hand from Ebay...however I did have a good friend who's husband was going to look at it, him being an engineer...
Anyway back to topic if everyone does it not a lot you can do really....Is it worth paying the extra £54 for a warranty btw..?0 -
I'd get the warranty for it, what is it 3yrs for around 60 can't beat that. I mind having a problem with my recovery partition once all I did was download a copy of XP (at the time) from the internet install it with my licence key and go to acers website and download the drivers for my particular laptop. Simples (as a fav advert says).0
