A Miele upright or a Miele Cylinder Vacuum

Hi all,
I know there are other threads which talk about the best vacuum cleaner, but haven't found much information to which is the best, an upright or a cylinder vacuum. Definately decided to go with Miele over Dyson after reading peoples opinions. I have one cat who doesn't leave a lot of hair around, but most of our apartment is carpet, so we need a vacuum cleaner that works well on carpet and tile. At the moment I am looking at the Miele cat and dog s7260 upright or the Miele cat and dog turbo 5000 cylinder. And I need help deciding which one to get!! Budget wise the cylinder is more in our price range, but my oh says we should just spend the extra to get an upright. What do you all think?

I have always had cylinder, and prefer them. A matter of simple preference, I think, rather than that one works better than the other.
I just find the cylinder easier to move around (stairs, getting under beds/cupboards etc). In some countries they are the norm.
I'd like to hear other people's opinions, as well, and also what you decide on (and why).
By the way, I also have the Miele and love it.

I prefer an upright to a cylinder. I find them easier to use and they don't give me a backache, although carrying them upstairs is a pain (thank goodness for tall, strong sons!). It really is personal preference.0

Now the Miele cat and dog is the dogs b0ll0cks of all vacuums when it comes to hair.
But I think Im right in saying that the upright is new?
I know WHICH rate the cylinder as the best ( as do I) and I think Im also right in saying that cylinders always have that bit more ooomph then uprights?
I would have the upright if it was a good as the cylinder0 -
They are so expensive though. I have the Argos value upright cleaner and it works just as good as my old Dyson that only lasted a few months.0

My miele is now 6 years old and going as well as the day it came out of the box. Used maybe three times a week its paid for itself ten times over. Yes you have to buy bags but a box lasts me nearly a year and tbh I prefer the clean disposal of the bags then tipping out the dyson.
When the henry packed up in work we switched to miele and the carpet was given a new lease of life0 -
I was in John Lewis asking about the Miele vacuum's and which was better, upright or cylinder as I've always had upright.
I was told unless you have mainly carpets throughout the house then to stick with the cylinder and save youself dome money.
I have wooden floors, laminate, tiles and carpet so I was adivsed to get the cylinder.
The habdle thing that you hoover with is very long and can be adjusted so you won't have back ache with using it, as this was one of my concerns.
I've still not bought it, I wanted to do some research on them both. But Im going to go at the weekend and buy it!!
Also in John Lewis they let you have a go of them, and the suction on the cylider was amazing, I didn't try the upright.0 -
Cat and dog cylinder here. Does an excellent job when twice a year my lab's coat pracically all falls out! Keeps up with 2 x Maine Coon hair as well which is no mean feat!!!!
Had a Dyson Animal - wouldn't ever have another one. Only lasted a year.0 -
Hi Everyone, thanks for all of your replies. I think I have made my decision. Think I will go with the Miele cylinder cat & dog. I went and had a look at them yesterday in John Lewis and i took a liking to the upright, but I really can't justify price!!0

I may be a little late here but I bought the upright Miele Cat and Dog a month or so ago and it's totally fab. Great at picking up all our cats hairs and the carpets have never looked better.
I haven't tried the cylinder and I'm sure it's great too, but personally I prefer uprights.
It is a little heavy though, so OH deals with the stairs :rolleyes:Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0 -
The thing is, if you have more carpet than pets the best thing to do is buy the upright, especially as the upright generally has an electric brush against the mechanical air driven brush tool on the cylinder model. This also means with pet hair you don't have to clean the brush bar as often as you would on the mechanical air driven turbo brush on the Miele cylinder.
The only downside is of course the price and the bag capacities. On the cylinder you've got a small bag capacity than the one offered on the upright and if you have pets to clear up after as well as acres of carpet then you'll need something that can deal with dirt head on. I'm not a fan of the Miele S7 in general as it is a big upright vacuum but for your need, its far better than considering the cylinder unless you want to keep buying more bags than you need due to the increase in dirt pick up and can't be bothered to wind up the power cord manually; the cylinder in this respect is better in offering auto cord rewind.
If you have stairs the Miele Cat and Dog upright model (or the one you speak of) also has a long stair hose, can be locked at the bottom to stop it falling over and comes with extra height adjustable tools that enables stair cleaning.0
