Have been on uswitch.com and amazed to see I can make a saving of £343 by switching from British Gas and npower to Scottishpower annually. It seems too good.Should I be aware of any potential problems in making this switch?

I think Scottish Power's cheapest tariff has a cancellation charge - there is a fee if you want to change again before Oct 2010. You should also look at British Gas and nPower dual tariffs - they may be a similar price. But, again, British Gas has a fee if you switch before Jan 2010 and nPower has an effective fee if you don't stay with them for twelve months.

There are other dual fuel tariffs that do not have tie-ins - their prices will differ. You should also check under the single fuel tabs - having two separate suppliers can be cheaper than the dual fuel bonuses (especially if you are currently using British Gas for gas and you are in nPower's historical region).

But, yes, if you haven't switched before or for a while the savings can be very significant.

If you choose an E-on, Scottish Power or EDF tariff then check topcashback.com (and others) for current cashback rates (rather than switching via here or a comparison site).

In my region (though I'm told they aren't offering it in all regions for some reason) the new EDF online 5 dual fuel is way cheaper than any other tariff, certainly based on average (20,500/3,300) usage. No exit fee, either (unlike the vast majority of the cheapest tariffs at the moment.)

Like KY says, it sometimes is cheaper to split your suppliers between gas and electric but not always. Whatever tariff you decide on, do post it on here before signing on the dotted line so we can give its T&Cs a thorough going over - this is the energy industry and is based very much on confusion marketing. HTH.
