He agreed your holiday date for the 14th, and he should honour it. The fact that this other person has two weeks booked off is irrelevant as he agreed to you having 14th off whilst she was on the sick - what if she was still on the sick? If he had told me I couldn't have it I would have simply said I had already made plans on the basis of our arrangement. I would not , by the way, have said what the plans were. You are under no obligation whatsoever to discuss your reasons for needing time off. If you are feeling run down and stressed out perhaps it is you who should have some sick leave? And don't beleive for one minute that you will be last out at redundancy time, I have seen many a loyal, hardworking colleague get the chop at the same time or even before a lazy skiving one.

In my experience, the more willing you are to accept this kind of behaviour - the more likely they are to dish it out to you. as in " Oh, John will cover it - he's always very obliging" "John won't mind changing his holidays around for us" etc. I have come to realise that an efficient manager (note i did not say good) is one that can delegate appropriately - in other words choosing the right man/woman for the job or finding a victim they can bully and intimidate when they need to be got out of a hole.

I suggest that next time you have time booked off you take it - regardless of their workload, "Jane" being on the sick, or so and so NEEDING the holiday more than you because of their kids holidays / sick mother etc etc. YOU are just as entitled to your holidays as the next person, YOU need time off, YOU are just as important as anyone else in that company.

    rant over !

Managers are trained to lie to their staff.

You are totally wrong here; managers become managers because they are good liars :D

    It's the old nature/nurture debate.......

i made the same mistake nearly a year ago
had 3 weeks leave booked(these dates are set by the company) and the manager asked me to delay 2 weeks of it
i agreed on 1 week which i could have back at 'any time'

well as i said its nearly a year ago,as yet ive had no holidays in that time.
infact due to staff shortages i didnt even get another week due to me in the spring period

so for being flexible im working beside people who may have had up to 5 weeks off work in the time ive had none.
    lesson learned
