several months back i booked 3 days off 5th,6th and 7th of August (week just gone)

however in the past few weeks a member of our team went of sick and another on bereavement leave. That left 2 of us on the team to do work for 4 people, we are already under staffed as it was. However the girl that was off sick was well and going to be back on the 10th. Anyway i spoke to my Line manager and said i would work the 5th and 6th due to the amount of work we have (plus i fell tight leaving the other member of staff on their own) but if i done this could i have the 14th off instead, he agreed this.

Yet last thursday he told me that that the girl that was coming back off sick had already booked the next fortnight off on annual leave and now i would'nt be able to take the 14th.

Ok I know people go off sick etc and im prepared to sacrifice a few days leave to cover, but I feel he lied to me so i would come in on the days i had booked off (mainly to cover his own back - stats etc )

i really could of done with those days as i feel stressed and run down, i feel quite upset and tricked by him, he must of known the annual leave situation as he is own diary with it booked and a central one for the whole dept in the shared folder online.

I had arranged to go to alton towers on the 14th now i have to cancel it:mad:

Well now you know next time you let them struggle, or if you want something in return you make sure its sorted up front. Of course you have to decide if its worth the hassle.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything

    Hereby lies the problem.

If he did not ask you to do so, and you offered, then he does not owe you.

If he specifically asked you to cancel them, and you agreed on the basis that you would CHANGE it to the 14th, then he couldn't get away with not allowing you to take the 14th off. Esp if it is not signed off and just a verbal agreement.

I'd think long and hard about helping him out again.

yeah definitley agree with Zazen999, you should of got the form changed and signed because he can now deny he ever agreed to anything.
Just put it down to experience now and don't help him out of a mess again, after all it was his problem in the 1st place, sometimes i find being nice gets you nowhere, its a shame but some people are like this.

I agree with everyone here - I think your boss behaved very unprofessionally.

But I wouldn't suggest being inflexible in future just because of this incident. Unfortunately, with things being the way they are right now, you have to be ready to go above and beyond the call of duty. It doesn't mean being a pushover, but if you are someone they can count on to cover gaps and pull the slack when necessary... well, you'll be the last to go if there's ever any need for redundancies.

Managers are trained to lie to their staff.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
