Full HD has generally become accepted as 1080 lines

i'm going to be picky again. i would say a correct description would be that full hd means 1080p can be displayed. a tv that is not full hd can still display 1080 but only 1080i and not 1080p. only 1080p is considered to be full hd i believe.

i questioned it because we have a 720 tv and if i connect a game console set at 1080p all i get is the sound and a black screen but if it is set at 1080i then the picture can be seen.

I am talking about NEW tvs. The vast majority of tvs will now allow 1080P content (Aside from the cheap tesco stuff etc)

Wrong, "Full" means 1080, EITHER i, or P.

Well, perhaps I live a sheltered life but I venture to suggest that you're unlikely to find a television that supports 1080p but not 1080i.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

No, but a set that only supports 1080i is still a "Full HD"

Better not start talking about support for 24fps then...

You could argue that all day as theres nothing offical to say what 'FULL HD' actually is
Personally I took it as 1080P and support for blurays 24fps, but id always check the spec first rather than taking it on retailers BS

Ill stick with my old 28" Trinitron KV until either a) they put something on TV/Sky/Cable worth watching or b) it explodes :p

That will be b) then ;)
