Problem with PC shutting down?

I have had my computer now for about 5 years.
Over the past 2-3 weeks, when i click on shutdown it seems my computer stops or stalls.
Instead of taking about 4 seconds to turn off it normally takes about 2 minutes or sometimes a warning note comes up saying it is unstable?

Anyone know what the problem is or to resolve it?

probably a driver or program not terminating properly. Is it 98/me?

are you free of viruses and spyware?

I have windows 98 Se version.
I have windows update which I download the latest programmes.
As far as I know, I havn`t downloaded any programmes to my pc?

have you got upto data av and antispyware software loaded?

if not try avast or avg , and lavasoft ad-aware, just to make sure you haven't picked something up.

there is a microsoft tool for 98, to help diagnose shutdown issues, but can't remember what it is called at the moment..
