repainting a bike

Hi,
I am planning to repaint a bike and I have been advised I should use enamel paint.
My question is - do I need to use undercoat or primer first?
Also, do I need to sand down the old paint first - or does this go straight on?
Some surfaces are bare metal others mostly are the old paint.
Many thanks for anyone able to help me.

Its ben a long time since I last painted a frame but...
Certainly sand down the old paint.
This keys it so that it will be rough & accept new paint on top, stopping it flaking off.
It would be a good idea to give it all a coat of primer so that the bare metal is not painted on, cove the whole frame so the colouring will be even.0
