Internal Doors

Like everything else in this place our doors are weird sizes. We've managed to get doors wide enough but it turns out we can't get them the length they need to be so we're going to have to add a bit of timber to them before we paint and hang them. The question is does the piece of timber go on the top or bottom of the door or do you actually change the architrave to fit the door?
thanks for your help

we had the same problem here
our doors are what they call
a metric size and are 80 inches long
and 32.5 wide.we have got doors to fit
to save having to alter the frames.
I saw a matching glass door so I am
getting one even though it will be too short
the joiner is going to add wood to the top
of the door frame to lower the height so
    he can fit it.

I can then just paint in the new wood to
match in with the door frame so its not
noticable, seems a better way than adding it to
the door it self as it would be difficult to get
the extra piece to blend in if its added to the door
    its self.

thanks for the help Rosekitten, we had a feeling that adding to the frame would be the better option but i'm not afraid of asking a stupid question to get advice from those who really know.

    WHOA ! STOP ! REWIND !
80 inches x 32.5 inches is a standard size of door commonly known as a `metric` door
The size to ask for from ANY builders merchants is 2040mm x 826mm
If in doubt look at this site for sizes & styles available , remember it`s 2040mm x 826mm you`re looking for .
    http://www.xljoinery.co.uk/detail.php?id=8134&tc=2
Don`t mention 80 inch or 32.5 inch as the merchant will , probably , not realise the size you`re after
    BUT
Be assured it IS a standard size door commonly available for approx £40

OOps , just actually read your post and see you found your metric doors
    :o
    Doh !
No more lager for me tonight then
I`m now officially too old to die young

believe me I know the size
its inprinted in my mind but
    that size is not commonly
    available everywhere amd every
where I have been they know
    well enough, sizing,there has
    never been any confusion
for them. they are the experts
    and know their stuff.

    a 2040 x 826 or 80.5 x 32.5
is a very hard size to buy no
one has them in stock but will
order in if available, but as we now
    know availability is at best
    poor.I bought oak doors I
know they dont sell them for £40
    even in regular sizes.

In my opinion, adding to the top of the frame would look best, but you also have to redo the architrave, or it would look silly and this will involve touching up the paint/plaster behind it.
Adding a bit to the door would be easiest - put it on the bottom so it's not as noticable.

thanks markie you've just confirmed what i've been thinking

    Check out the above site.
Just come across this whilst looking for something else - not sure if you've already bought your doors but the size you're looking for (2040 x 826) is available from Doors & More. They're an online retailer I've used in the past, excellent service and they now do free delivery. I bought Mexicano Oak and got delivery within 3 weeks.

Any probs give them a ring, they really know their stuff. Hope this is of some help.

    Cheers

thanks for this, unfortunately i've already bought the door and also need them in three widths and most taller doors only seem to come in the largest door width. but thank you again for the information.
  • Howdens keep metric doors in stock, loads of styles and 626, 726, 826 widths, as hairybuilder says. The likes of Jewson and any other timber merchant can easily order these in for you also.

The sheds do not stock metric, only imperial.

Why would you alter a door frame when the door frame is made to suit a standard size door???

    Good luck

We bought our doors from howdens they had
a matching glazed door,I fancied putting it
on the kitchen and having the rest plain wood.
the glazed door is only available in standard size
none were wide enough or long enough.
So i went to EG doors and they found me a
matching glazed door that is wide enough but
not as long as the other doors. So their joiner is
going to alter the door frame to make it fit.

I must say at this point everywhere I went they
advised against trying to add the height to the door
as it will be hard to blend in as we are not painting it
but waxing it with Osmo instead to match the others.
I have been assured that their joiner will fit it so
it looks really nice.Well the door arrives tomorrow
and its fitted on Thursday. So we will see
