Selling open perfume on Ebay ?

Options
Is it permitted to sell perfume that has been opened (and some used) on Ebay and does it sell well? I have 2 bottles of branded perfume (eg Jadore) with over 80% of the original left and was wondering if I would make much by selling them? Is there any time limit after which I shouldn't sell because the contents will have "gone off", eg is it still OK if it's been open for 5 years (I don't wear much perfume!)?

Thanks for the advice!

Hi, just looked for you, don't know about the date but this auction has opened perfume, about half used as well and that has sold, so you should be ok if there if the perfume hasn't gone off.

It will depend on how/where it has been stored - in its box, away from heat and light, perfume lasts for ages. Is your nose dependable enough to check that it still smells OK?

It is the only sort of cosmetics and beauty products that you can sell as used:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/used-cosmetics.html

Used cosmetics, excluding perfumes, are not permitted for sale on eBay.

Karin received a bottle of perfume for her birthday. She has tried it for some days, but unfortunately, she does not like the fragrance. Since the item is a bottle of perfume, she is allowed to sell it on eBay.

Also you may want to set your selling options to UK only, as some countries will confiscate perfumes, especially opened bottles and you could be hit for INR's.

You should consider making a security marking on the bottom of the bottle with a UV pen, or you could end up with a person swapping the bottle to a fake and claiming money back. I have read that has happened before with used perfume. ;)

Thanks for the responses - I might give it ago then as I'm trying to have a big clear out.

The bottle that has been open for quite a while smells right to me but I have a totally lousy sense of smell so this is pretty much meaningless! It hasn't been stored in the box, just on my dresser but not in direct sun or anything.
  • This thread has given me an idea - I have this perfume that was given to me as a gift that I've only used a few times (so about 3/4 left). Just did a completed listing search and other opened bottles of the same perfume have been going for about a fiver so I've listed mine. Might as well make a bit back for it rather than have it sitting around!

If you don't trust your nose you could check the colour against a new one. Although some perfumes darken/yellow slightly without going off, it is an indicator of a change in scent, which some buyers would be jumpy about.

I've just sold two open bottles. Both had only been sprayed 2 or 3 times. One went for a few quid (not a popular brand) and the other sold for £25 (without box) so I was well pleased as it would just be sitting around cluttering the place up otherwise. I set my preferences to exclude bidders from outside the UK for the reason stated before but I had loads of queries from international bidders.
