website to book local excursions?

I read a newspaper article recent-ish about a website where you could book excursions and trips with local operators (thus probably cheaper than your tour company) but they had some kind of reputation/guarentee so you knew they would turn up etc.
Of course, I thought "that sounds really good, must remember that" and have not looked up or bookmarked the page.

Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about or know of a similar type of website?

Thanks

    Not sure..

When I went to Ecuador I used a company called Viator, who book trips all over the world but then they are conducted by a local company (in Ecuador is was Gray Line)

You could also try Citydiscovery, they organise trips with local operators all over the world. Did a great 2 day trip with them in Portugal, and paid the same as people who booked in Portugal with a local agent.

We also booked through the Viatour website before we went to the far East last year. However, when we arrived we found it was cheaper to book trips locally than through Viator, so not sure if it would save you money. The main advantage I supppose is that you will defintely reserve places rather than run the risk of popular ones being booked up, especially if you're not staying in a place for very long.

We normally have a look on the Trip Advisor forum for the area we are going and make a note of local company names and then go and see them when we get there.
Here I go again on my own....
