Confused by doorbell

Maybe the bell push is live all the time. Hold your bridging (practice) piece of wire across 0 + 1, when you remove it does it sound?
Nothing happens at all when connecting 0 and 1, or when breaking the connection. My TV is broken!

You may have to bite the bullet and get someone in- ps wired bells are far superior to wireless ones, it's usually the push button outside that goes.
It's a single LED... is it really a big drain on 4 x Ds? I don't care about the light tbh, I'll remove it if necessary. My TV is broken!

It is a small drain, but a constant one- it will cause issues.
That is probably why the unit is not striking
Do the instructions (for new bell push) say must be connected to a transformer (or similar) ?baldly going on...0 -

Ok, the bell push isn't even in the equation yet.
I am looking at the bell unit. The old bellwire is still attached, but not wired to anything at the other end.
It's a cheapo wilko bell push with no instructions
It just has two connections to wire up, and an LED in the middle.

The theory is:
Wire button to 0 and 1, to have it so that the bell will go bing bong bing bong for as long as the button is held in.
Wire the button to 0 and 2, to have it bing when the button is pressed and bong when it is released.
Sounds like the first option (repeating) is broken, probably a wire break to the mercury tilt switch. If you don't want that option, just wire it the second way and all will be well.
At the end of its life, please take it to your local re-cycling centre , the mercury in the tilt switch is extremely toxic.

Sounds like a plan.
Surprising how a doorbell circuit can go wrong in more than one way
