Canterbury - ideas of things to do?

Hi all

I'm taking OH back to Essex in July (I live in Wales now, where she's from) and she wants to go to Canterbury for a day.

Can anyone suggest good things to do in a day there?

Any recommendations for places to see/eat would be gratefully received.

Thanks

    Hi,

Obviously there's the Cathedral to see, the Canterbury Tales (sort of walkthrough history of Canterbury) there's a new Whitefriars shopping area if you're looking for shops while you're down.
As for eating, usual assortment of pizza places, Ask Pizza probably about the best of those. I recommend Marlowes Restaurant in the High Street just past the main post office for huge portions of very tasty mexican or burger/steak type food at very very good prices. You can also take your own wine in there and get charged no corkage.
Cafe des Amis down by the Westgate is an excellent Mexican but very popular so you'd have to prebook there probably.
If you're after historical sights then apart from the Cathedral then the next best thing is probably Dover Castle which is about 30mins away down the A2 especially with its Underground Hospital tour/experience.
Best to use a park and ride if you can since parking and traffic around inner ring road can be a nightmare.

Feel free to ask any more specific questions or give me more ideas of what your interests might be...

    Cheers,
    Steve.
  • It's been years since I have been to Canterbury, I used to live in Kent, so would go very regularly.

I just wanted to add that there is a theatre there, so it may be worth looking to see what is on when you plan to go, might make a good evening or matinee

There's also the Roman Museum, Museum of Canterbury and Westgate Tower. You can buy a combined ticket for these for £6 adult.

The cathedral is nice but a bit expensive admission at £6!

It's a pretty place to wander around looking at the old buildings. On a sunny day a short boat trip along the river from westgate might be fun. Part of the city wall is a footpath.
