Is there a way i can display 2 windows side by side to compare stuff without having to drag it about and struggle to get it in the right position.

Yeh, use the middle button (next to the 'X') this will resore down the current window.
All you have to do then is resize it by draggin a corner to fit on side of the screen. Open another windows and do the same but put it to the other side of the screen.0 -
If you only have the 2 windows open then right click on the toolbar on the bottom of the page. You get some options but if you select Tile Windows Vertically that should do the trick0

A bit of a different answer:
Get more than one monitor, even if you have an old spare CRT or TFT (like I do) you can usually hook them up to your graphics card (providing it has another output, such as either two VGA or a VGA and DVI).
Then you have one window on one monitor and another window on the other monitor, very simple once its set up
(And you can drag windows between the two, or split a single screen over both...)
