Internet Explorer messing me around with Flash player

Internet Explorer has just started telling me that it does not have the correct version of Adobe Flashplayer and so can't play videos and other animations. So I follow the link to download the latest version and then IE tells me that an error has occurred - the application references memory at "123456x" which can't be "read". Then IE tells me it has to close. So I can't get the new version of Adobe.

Firefox makes no such complaint about showing videos and works fine. But I prefer to use IE because I have problems with Firefox in other areas. Any ideas how to fix this?

When I look in My Programs I can't find Flash anywhere, either under the Adobe folder or in a folder of its own so I don't know what version I've got.
