Brands and their packaging OTT?

I have started working with a company which deals with some very large brands, brands which you see in your shopping markets, brands you will see in most countries shopping markets in fact.

The company I'm working with helps manage brands, by making them stand out, keep the same appearance as in design, colours and so on.

I have been made aware that the big brands spend more money on the packaging of their products than the product in some (if not most) cases, for example the box of a tube of toothpaste costs more than the toothpaste and tube cost. (We throw away the box on the day we open it too) check out the work gone into the box next time you buy toothpaste.

Cosmetics in general are a joke, I was shocked at the costs of a well known lipsticks packaging costs + product to its RRP. The packaging cost was ten times the amount to what the pigmented wax cost and the RRP was ten times to the cost of the packaging.

The list is too long for me to name everything, as it is pretty much everything, so I’m unsure how we can stop feeding this problem of over packaging costs being passed onto us.

The company has made me think about what we're paying for, and how it’s all sent to landfill within days of purchasing an item, I hope it make others think too.

If anyone has more to add on the subject please do.

Whilst I was aware that companies hired professionals to design their packaging I had no idea that the costs of packaging exceeded the cost of the products. A clearly ridiculous situation.

You'd think that somebody, somewhere, would identify a niche in the market and produce quality goods that were extremely basic in terms of packaging at lower prices. However, could consumers be lured into picking up items that were not in shiny attractive packaging?

It does not suprize me at all I have to say. Advertising and packaging cost alot because they are what sell a product, they create a state of mind which you believe the product works because it looks "quality".

If a company didn't grab your attention with their product, its left on the shelves, you don't buy it, the company make no money. Yes the spend alot on packaging and advertising, but then they just raise the prices to compensate.

Looks and first opinions count for more then you imagine.

Children's toys have far too much packaging. My brother used to collect Star Wars figures in the late 70's/early 80's. They would come on a printed card with a plastic bubble and the figure was inside the bubble.

Now you get a box, with an additional cardboard "scene" behind the figure. Then the figure is bound into place by umpteen rubber bands and those twisty plastic and metal tie things, and any weapons or other accessories are bound into their hands with more ties or rubber bands. It drives me mad, especially when you have an excited child who is desperate to play with the toy and they keep telling you to hurry up!

Once they bought London taxi and bus toy cars on holiday, but we couldn't get them out of the box as they were screwed onto a plastic plate. We didn't have a screwdriver on holiday so they had to wait until we got home before they could play with them.
Here I go again on my own....
