HI there,
I didn't know where else to put this question:
I'm going to be starting a new exercise routine in the next week or so and need some dumbbells. I read somewhere on here a good idea about using empty bottles as dumbbells (I would say coke is the best as they have an 'erganomic' shape :-) ), I was wondering about weight though.
I think 1 litre of water = roughly 1 kilo, does anyone happen to know how much a 1ltr coke bottle filled with sand might weigh? Or any other substance? I would test myself but I don't happen to have any sand (who does?) and I don't want to buy any just to discover it's no good. I live in a flat, what am I gonna do with unwanted sand??
Cheers

Hi joebloggs69
Well done on your new exercise routine.
have a look at this site http://www.simetric.co.uk/si_materials.htm
if I got it right, 1L of water = 1kg of water = 1.6kg of sand.
I hope this helps.0 -
Hi joebloggs69, when I excercise in the house, I just fill my bottles with water. I've never really thought about what they weigh. They do say use beaked bean cans as well, but they are awkward to hold. How about maybe getting some cheap pulses from the weigh house shops? (think thats what there called)
Good luck with the new excercise routine.

Tesco fitness equipment is really cheap and theres little point in using too small a weight (the classic tin of beans) or something so large its difficult to hold. AND you can use grocery coupons to get them for free...Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

thanks for the replies guys, I really didn't expect anyone to have an answer! I will check out Tesco's (check out - get it?) and in the mean time I'll carry on with water - since I'm pretty scrawney at the moment I'm sure 1 Kg in each hand will do me for now. Thanks for the support, I think it's not going to be easy trying to be on a budget AND fit and healthy AND environmentaly friendly - maybe I'm taking on too much at once!
Cheers

OK you lot - i've got a challenge for you...
..take a feather in either hand. Your choice. Any hand you like.
I'm not kidding. Really I'm not.
Now...
.. let your feather holding hand rest full length down below your waist.
Then...
..raise it to full arm extension above your head..
..then CONTROLLED (ie don't just let it drop) back down to full rest below your waist.
Repeat 400 times.
Once you've cracked it...
..start on your weaker arm.
Once you've cracked it - post back here and tell us.
Try it.
And yes, once upon a time I could do it - but it is nowhere as easy as you might think it is.
