Hard drive fault I think

Options
I have another computer which is a Dell Dimension 4400.I got a boot failure system halted the other day and after doing a CTRL-ALT-D it came up as no IDE.I guess that meant the hard drive is knackered(Only one on this machine.)

I have yet to install another one.read a some reviews about Western Digital from a computer magazine,I not so sure about these now. However on ebuyer
it did come up trumps.I feel I may want to invest in a Seagate(around £32+).

I realise that I will need an IDE around 80GB I am going for, however as I only took out 20GB I am unsure if this will be compatiable .
Also can I remove data from a corrupt harddrive?
Your info will be grateful

hard drive failure would be my first prognosis but I would check cables connection etc and also perhps try it in another IDE slot on the Mboard to make sure itsnt the M/board controller -unlikely though but worth a check.
You could also try asking the machine in BIOS to auto detect the drive if it currently has a differnet setting - unlikley to work but you never know your luck
Western digital IDE drives have been v good for me but Seagate have been even better - especially if you download and use ther disk managemtn formatting software
    from their website.
I cant see you having any comatibility issues, I never have. Though 9x versions of windows had hard drive size configuration issues that i never truly understood - other IT helpers on here are more qualified than me to comment. .
I have had mixed success getting data from a failing drive, there may be other more technical methods but I have installed windows on the newly purchased drive. Set the old one up as a slave to the new master (need to change jumpers etc) boot up and x fingers windows picks it up and I can transfer data then before drive gives up ghost.
dont confuse me with facts I need to think here!!!!

Try putting the knackered drive in the deep-freeze overnight. Then connect it as a slave or secondary drive to a working PC. This often gets a disk running long enough to copy critical documents.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker

    It's going to be an 80GB IDE.Should I get the ST380011A?
However unsure if the ST3802110A will be better. Also appears to come with a 5yr guarantee instead of the one year offered with ebuyer(11a out of stock)
  • Hi
You can't go wrong with Seagate drives, one of the best, thats why they give you the 5yr warranty, never had on fail me yet.

    Hope this helps

    PS I got a 250gb Seagate for £60+ about 2weeks ago.
    Have a look here

Stunning reviews for both arent they? not sure how they differ other than what it says on reviews that 2110A might be updated version. Only difference I can see on seagate site is (2110A )
"RoHS Compliant - Meets or exceeds all current and proposed environmental standards and legislation"

i have two seagate 80g ST380023A (guess it is older version of the one you are thinking about)- running in my PC and they have been flawless for the two years I think it is now I have had them
dont confuse me with facts I need to think here!!!!
