Finding a good cheap surveyor

Is there any alternative to word of mouth or consulting http://www.ricsfirms.com/vw/search/location.aspx to find a good but reasonable surveyor to check out properties? Any tips on handling them?

I asked my EA. Didn't like the first one he recommende so went back and asked for another name. Seemed to be friendly on the phone, doing the survey on Monday - reserving judgement til then.
The other person to ask is the mortgage valuer. They should be happy to quote for doing a survey at the same time.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. My suspicion/fear is that estate agents may have cosy arrangements with certain surveyors who pay them a commission to recommend them or (worse) turn a blind eye to faults in houses from those agents to ensure sales go through!0

I'm not worried if a surveyor pays a commission - I'm only interested in the price I pay.
Surveyors have their professional reputation and liability to consider. Turning a blind eye to major faults is going to be risky. I actually want a surveyor who identifies problems and costs solutions rather than one who puts so many caveats in the report its not worth the paper its written on.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. What concerns me is that a poor surveyor may get recommended by an estate agent who received a commission to do so. If you look around the site you will see numerous examples of surveyors who do shoddy work and there seems to be little recourse afterwards.0
