Custom number formats give you additional formatting options.......see below from MS Excel Help
You can specify up to four sections of format codes. The sections, separated by semicolons, define the formats for positive numbers, negative numbers, zero values, and text, in that order. If you specify only two sections, the first is used for positive numbers and zeros, and the second is used for negative numbers. If you specify one section, all numbers use that format. If you skip a section, include the ending semicolon for that section.
By combining these with Conditional Formatting, your options are increased, e.g. use the custom formatting for negatives and zero values and conditional for three more.....

I've managed to create a worksheet that does everything I want it too, I don't think it's the most elegant piece of of spreadsheet creating but it works.
Just got to show it to the bosses now to see what they think.
