Whole Grain Oats - and what to do with them?

Hi everyone :)

When raiding my cupboards last night, I came across a packet of whole grain oats, and I'm not really sure what to do with them. (I don't even remember buying them, to be honest :o)

I know that on the continent, you can sometimes get yoghurts with oats in them to act as a source of fibre. Since I have some yellow-stickered fruit, I was wondering if I could add the oats to a smoothie? And if I were to do this, would the oats require any sort of pre-soaking, etc., or could I just toss them in?

Any other suggestions would also be greatly appreciated.

Andrina :)

We don't really eat porridge any more, all oats are required for the making of these delicious morsels!!:D

    Swedish Chocolate balls
    100g Margarine
    120g (about 4 oz) Sugar
    1 tbsp Vanilla extract
    3tbsp cocoa powder
2 tbsp black coffee (mix instant coffee with water as if you were doing a strong cup of coffee, If you dont like coffee just replace it with water)
    1 pint of porridge oats

Mix it all together. Roll the mix into individual balls between your hands and then roll them in 100 and 1000 or desiccated coconut

They will keep nicely in the fridge for a couple of days or you can freeze them if you'd like (and eat them frozen :) )

  • Copied out the flapjack thread :) These are my FAVE! they're super yummy. Adapted from a rivercottage recipe that I thought tasted/felt like sawdust. I wanted to make something more like a harvest cheweee bar cos I used to be addicted to em ;) They taste cak now compared the these little babies :D

    Nixie's Fabulous FlapJacks.

    100g Golden Syrup
    100g Soft brown sugar
    200g butter / marge
    250g Jumbo rolled oats
    2 x tablespoon Ovaltine
    70g cocopops
    100g plain flour
    Chocolate for drizzling - optional

Set the oven to pre-heat at 160 degrees.

Then take a large sauce pan and put it over a gentle heat. Add the syrup, sugar and the butter. Melt them all together slowly.
(I've got fancy scales that allow me to weigh in the pan - just zero the weight - so I weigh everything in the pan first then put it on the heat)
Make sure the ingredients in the pan are well combined and the sugar has melted. You should be able to stir in the butter slick that settles on top and the mixture resembles something like butterscotch that I'd quite like to pour over ice cream - hmmm mebbe I'll try that ;)
    Easily distracted me :)
Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl so the oats the flour the ovaltine and the cocopops - other chocolaty rice cereals are available - take the pan off the heat and pour the dry ingredients into it.
Mix until everything is combined and coated in the syrupy mixture.
Tip the gooey mixture into a shallow baking tray. I'd suggest a brownie tray lined with parchment or greaseproof paper. Smooth out the top and push the mixture down quite firmly.
Bake in the oven for 20 to 25 mins. the edges just take on a very slight golden colour.
When this happens remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin.
When cooled you can drizzle them with melted chocolate before sliding them out of the tray (I keep them on the paper) and slicing them into bars. If you do drizzle with chocolate wait until the chocolate is almost set before attempting to portion them - unless you want choc all over your fingers that you have to lick off. Its the law you know? Like licking the spoon. It must be done :)

I find with the Ovaltine - they just dont need the drizzled chocolate, no harm in both but I find them just as yummy without :D

when you say whole grain oats - do you mean rolled oats or oat groats (the latter look like grains of wheat).

Groats need soaking before cooking, but make fantastic porridge if you have a slow cooker.

    They can also be sprouted.
