Did I actually hear her say that an acquaintance of hers, who employs 400 people, "normally doesn't provide sick pay"? That really must be a crappy firm to work for.

I took it that she meant 'company' sick pay.

Sure enough, one after the other they all called in sick. Nobody else has got it, just the shortlist of women who spend more time off sick than in work.

It's a bit like saying people on benefits are cheats, not all of them are, but a lot are.

A lot of firms these days do not pay company sickpay and you jsut get SSP. My previous employer wouldn't pay first 3 days of sick pay for existing staff and just SSP after 3 days for new staff but I managed to negotiate an exemption on health grounds as due to my health condition I argued that it was more likely if I was off sick it would be the odd day so would be discrimination against me and they agreed. As it was I took just 1 day off and had one of the best sickness records in the company!
