I am enquiring on behalf of my brother. He has just moved into a new build house which has a bt socket in it. Now i have been told by many people on this site that bt will activate the line for free or for a small charge as he is not wanting to take bt line rental or call package due to the mess i went through with a nightmare of changing to bt from virgin (long story). Now he has contacted the company he wants to take the package with and they told him to phone up bt and ask them to activate the socket. Now he has done this but on each attempt bt tell him he must sign up to a contract and take line rental with bt. So i am wondering wether all the info I have been getting from reading various posts on this site is wrong or whether he is being taken for ride by bt when he calls them. If anyone can help please it would be great!

So you expect BT to connect the property to the exchange Free of Charge without taking out a contract with them. Your having a larf are you not.
BT will only connect a property that does not have a fully working line for free if you sign an 18 month contract.
The provider of his choice will be able to connect it direct if they choosed to do so. One things for sure they wont do it for free like BT.0 -

No your wrong there! Every company he has been in contact with have TOLD him that he needs bt to activate the line before they can take it over. Now he is in a crap position becuase he has moved into a brand new flat that has the bt socket there and ready to go. But the only option he has is to sign an 18month contract that ties him to bt. So is that very fair? No not at all. So i'm not having a larf as you put it. I am following advice given to me by not only talktalk but o2 as well.0 -

No i am not wrong. Plenty of companies can arrange for new lines to be connected including Talk Talk ,some cant be bothered and just want to cherry pick BT,s customers.
Heres some examples of those that will connect new lines.Unlike BT they will not do it for free, or even at a small charge.
