My mother in law lives in America and often sends me dvds however they are all region 1 so I can not play them in my dvd player.
Im thinking that a multi region palyer would be a good idea but I cant afford an expensive one and I need one that does actually work ( heard stories of people having to find access codes etc... and it being very difficult to actually get their player set up for multi region ).
Can anyone suggest a player to me?

I've had a few Pioneer players in my time and they are all multi region and never had an issue... also had a toshiba and that was fine... try richer sounds as you can get some good bargains on there...
£50 for a multi region sony - http://www.richersounds.com/product/dvd-players/sony/dvpns39/sony-dvpns39-blk
or £90 for an upscaling HDMI region free onkyo - http://www.richersounds.com/product/dvd-players/onkyo/dvsp406/onky-dvsp406-blk

Pioneer as was suggested is good (never had an issue with them). Philips is an easy one to make it region free. I have a lot of region 1,2 and 4 dvds and I just bought one from argos a few years ago and it was just a matter of entering in a code with the remote and voila - region free. The only ones that I think are difficult to set up are normally sony ones (I seem to remember you have to get an all in one remote to do it) and possibly toshiba?0

What DVD player do you currently have? (make? Model?)
Most DVD players can be unlocked to change region and many can be changed to multi-region. It is just a case of finding the correct sequence of buttons to press.0 -
If you have a DVD drive on your PC, a program called DVD43 can remove region encoding on the fly.
This is what DVD43 does:-DVD43 is a free DVD decrypter that runs in the background and decrypts DVDs on the fly. It will decrypt (unlock) a movie DVD so that your copy program can read it.
What it won't do is change the region setting of a PC's DVD drive.

It is quite possible that your player can be made to be "Region Free".
do a google search for your player manufacturer and model with region free at the end.
eg
dvd player pioneer 12345 region free
you might then find that by doing a few pushbuttons on the remote etc it can be done.
here is a start for searching

lots of sites want paying for the info, but if you persevere then if there is a hack for your player, then you should find it free.0 -
Do yourself a favour get a Blu Ray player. I got this multiregion player > Sony BDP-S360 Blu Ray Player"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

What {DVD43} won't do is change the region setting of a PC's DVD drive.
But... you wouldn't need to change the region setting of your DVD drive if you use DVD43!
Have you tried it yourself? You could, say, lock your DVD player to region 1, run DVD43 in the background, then play a region 2 DVD. That's how it works on my PC anyway.0 -
