As we did with the last lot of new rules I thought I would sticky the announcement about the new free p and p categories in case people haven't read their emails from ebay. As soon as we are used to them I'll unsticky this.
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/sell/sellerupdate/freeshipping.html
From 19th October 2009 sellers listing in selected media categories will be required to offer free P&P as their first domestic postage option. To help you adapt listings quickly and easily we’re also introducing new bulk editing functionality in mid September.
media includes all books and associated categories, all DVD film and TV categories (not the hardware though), and all music formats. Free post and packing is already a required on DVDs and video games.
There are lots of other changes occuring in October but I have made this a sticky as it tends to affect the most people. The full set of changes are here

this bit's quite interesting
''Tips for media sellers:- Free P&P only applies to the first domestic option – you can still offer further chargeable service options''

It is a bit misleading though as you can offer whatever enhanced services you want, you just can't force anyone to use them and there is no way round it.
Offer free UK postage and then say it is by camel or the slow boat from china (which is difficult from the drop down menu on the listing page anyway) and buyers are still entitled to select it and start a paypal chargeback for non receipt on day 7.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Free Postage on ebay - ebay's rule.
1. appears ebay (to the gullible) is THE place to buy, as no postage costs
2: ebay appears (to the gullible) to be providing a free service.
3: ebay accumulates more commission from listings and sales. In fact, it does not matter at all to ebay if the higher priced items (that will now include postage costs) ever sell, as listing fees alone are suffice for them.
4: (a) buy an LP record for a pound. lb) list it on ebay. (c) Sells for £4. (d) costs £3 p&P.to dispatch. (e) err. a minus equity!
5: Books post free? Give yourself back quality time: take yours to the local charity shop, and don't buy anymore for resale!
6: First DVD's. Now Books, records, etc. Next will be... everything else?
7: Debit card payments levy 25p with a merchant. Credit card less than 2% for any business with a reasonable turnover. Compare this against Ebay's enforced Paypal.
Ebay rules.
Well, to those who choose this to be so?

Me again.
I spoke to someone on the telephone who purported to be a spokesperson for Royal Mail. He sounded West African to me. Spoke very clearly and was very helpful. He understood how I became to be angry over the new ebay policy that commences in October.
He informed me that as from November, any registered dealer selling on ebay will be eligible for a free postage costs from Royal Mail. That is, you pay the Post Office in the usual way, and once a month send the receipts to Royal Mail and they will reimburse expenses by transferring the money paid out into your business bank account. In turn, the Government will give then give the Post Office even more money, as the British Industry must not have any further downturns. I pointed out that as far as I was aware, ebay.co.uk filtered the money out of the British Isles, so why would the British Government pour money into this scenario? No answer there. Never mind, my main concern is me, myself, I. Selfish as this appears, but being self employed for over 20 years and having never received any handouts, subsidies, etc, who cares?
Back to the matter in hand: one has to provide their ebay username and password, along with proof of their business by providing one's business bank details (to transfer the money), and a copy of one's passport. "After all, we don't want those who are not business people taking advantage of this special arrangement!" he said. "There's too many people out there making a lot of money on all sorts of scams" he added.
This is good news for the genuine self-employed. Those who sell for 'a hobby' and turn over £1000's of pounds every quarter will be jealous. Perhaps this will prompt them to register as a bone fide dealer? All that postage they appear to overcharge buyers on will come in useful I am sure.
Ii annoys me when people criticize 'foreigners' who are manning call centres (for females is it womanizing? I never now. English language can be somewhat confusing - to us English) Anyway, I have never had any problems or issues with this.
I called Royal Mail this morning to confirm this offer. Apparently nobody seemed to have any idea of what was going on. But as I expect you have experienced this, as is nothing new with them - is it?
I look forward to hearing back for the caller, confirming my details that I provided.
I'm a happy man again! :rotfl:0 -
We have a few too many stickies so I will unsticky this one but bookmark it in case any one asks about the new inclusive postage categories.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. This is like the emails that used to do the rounds telling us that Microsoft were going to pay us for sending emails. We would all like to believe we might get something for nothing but if it's too good to be true...0
