IISONIC DivX player USB Playback Problem

Options
Have recently purchased a IISONIC II3016PU DVD/DivX player from Pixmania. One of the main reasons for purchase was the USB port, which I thought would allow me to plug in my external hard drive (USBTech Portable Hard Drive 40GB).

Initially recognizes a USB connection but refuses to read disk. Have tried it with a single divx movie on it but get nothing, same with a single mp3 file.

Does anyone know if I need to power up the hard drive (I don't need to on my PC or Mac). The hard drive is USB 2.0.

I don't have the same player as you but have a portable DVD player with a USB port. I can't get it to play files off my external hard disk but it plays mp3's fine off a USB flash drive.

there are a number of reasons why this can be,

#1 power. Portable drives that use USB need high power (hence why some have dual USB ends, for power from 2 USB's). Your DVD may not be supplying enough power. If the drive is 'clicking' then thats the problem

#2 The DVD may NOT be able to read form anything bigger than 4.3 gig (i think). its a throwback from the available space PC's can address. Format the drive to 4 gig and try that, it may work. if it does then try to partition into 4 gig partitions, though the DVD may only read the 1st one.

so the solution to #1 will be to buy a plug in USB power plug (like normal plug, but with USb socket) though this may not work.

I have had this on a car head unit and nothing i tried worked!

Have tried the power supply option but it still no joy, I'll try and format the drive to see if this will work.
