data protection act????

2 days ago i had a delivery from U.P.S. of several parcles. i signed for them and about a hour after the delivery man had left, realised that i had signed for a parcle that was for a lady at an address around the corner.

There was no number on the box to call U.P.S., and i was unsure about delivering the parcle myself to the lady as i had signed for it, and there was nothing to say the lady could contact U.P.S. after i had delivered it asking where her parcle was. so decided to wait for the delivery man to return.

24 hours later, the delivery man did return to collect the parcle, but mentioned the lady had come to my address to collect herself.

After a hour to think about this, i pulled the contact details for U.P.S from the internet, rang them, and was promptly told the customer had a right to know the name and address of where her parcle had been mis-delivered to! this was to give the customer the chance to collect herself.

but surley, even then, theres nothing to stop this lady collecting the parcle herself and then contacting U.P.S and claiming she never had it?? or i could have had a confrontation on my door step if i had realised the mistake after i had opened it? (which i never).

Are they really allowed to give out my details to other customers??
they claim its there policy to do so!

And would you have the right to ask her for identification?
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

If you took in her parcels, the delivery people take your details so that if the original customer calls up to ask where their items are, the company can tell them. What they assume is that you will deliver it to the correct person themselves and as you were not told you were collecting an item for someone would mean you have an issue with the delivery company who should have let you know first.

It looks like the delivery person didn't want to take the parcel to the depot so gave you the impression the parcel was for you so you would agree to take them in.

Personally, I would kick up a fuss at them tricking you if thats what they have done. And the moral of the story is to always check the label first!
