Travel from London to Basingstoke

Hey,

What is the cheapest way to travel from London to Basingstoke off peak. Train fares are around £30, and Coach fares are £18, any advice on how to get this cheaper?

Cheers

On https://www.thetrailine.com there is a same day return ticket for £18.40 on the train Waterloo to Basingstoke via Woking.
Might need to be off peak.
I doubt you'll get it cheaper than that.

£19.80 Train if you change at Reading (Single), but above journey is cheaper.

Why pay extra to travel via Reading? £18.20 off peak day single from Waterloo.

You WILL get it cheaper than that - by just NOT buying it from the trainline.com !

Please do tell, a few times a year I travel Paddington to Tiverton Parkway £64 single off peak. Would love to find it cheaper than the trainline or fitst great westerns web site (which seems to be the same re-branded).

What he means is that if you don't buy from thetrainline, you don't pay their fee on top of the fare.

Fares are (with few exceptions) identical on all sites.

Some of the time you could get an advance fare for your journey though?

I booked more than 48 hours in advance, it was last Friday when I travelled. Didn't seem to make a difference though I understand it sometimes can.
The odd £1 or £3 in booking fees I consider of no consequence of a £64 ticket and the conveniance of doing it online and collecting the ticket from the machine at the station.
I'd love to know how you actually get the £18+ tickets the web site implied could be available but not when I wanted to travel which was the first off peak train on a Friday evening.

Well you need to book a bit more than 48 hours ahead.

£32.50 or even £22.50 on Friday 7 September for example. The higher fare is on the 1836 and all later trains and is a walkon fare on the 1903 and later. £17 is available late in the evening

Most trains have something cheaper than £64 available
