bt monthly dd changed...

This is going to be long so i'll keep it to the facts
Been paying by whole bill plan for last x years, longer than I can recall
December last year I requested to change the date I pay the DD as i'd like it to occur the day before I get paid to maximise my benefits.
BT stated yes that is fine, however not possible on whole bill option, but can do it on monthly plan instead.
So monthly plan set up with £11.50 DD per month paying on the 17th or there abouts
Just received bill from BT asking to increase this DD to 22PM due to their price increase in line rental (£1 per month increase or there abouts) and to cover a debit that has been accrued.
Now this debit is what I question and would like to clarify.
My understanding from my bill for goodness how long is
BT bill me today for next 3 months of line rental and last 3 months of calls
I pay over next 3 months DD which clears this/last payment (i've lost track)
To add to this BT now want to move payment dat to the 24th from the 1st to bring bill in line with billing? Not sure I understand, but hey ho. This means paying 10quid to move the date they calculate line rental from the 1st to the 24th.
Now I can reasonably accept the 10£ fee, but having said that it was no effect on me before, so struggle to see why I should foot £10 to move my billing period with them
However paying an extra £10 a month also seems a little extreme.
The rep on the phone states it is because I pay my 3months line rental IN ADVANCE, therefore the 41.25 I now owe is to get me in line with everyone else, however if this is the case, why in the x years i've been with BT has this never been raised before. I can see all my previous payments and I have never missed a payment and my bills per month/DD has always covered everything, therefore how have I gone into 41quid's worth of debt from nowhere.
It would appear that previously for the last x years i've effectively been paying for my line rental as it comes and now BT want it all 3months in advance.
I will move back to whole bill plan I think to resolve this, just curious to find out:
Has anyone else had their bill date moved, therefore paying an additional sum to BT for what amounts to nothing?
Do people pay their line rental in advance or after bill arrives? I am particularly interested in those whom have whole bill plan monthly. What is the line rental timing on those bills?
Sorry it's rather fragmented, but not sure how to put into words this issue. The BT 150 caller representative did not have answer and just said "i'll arrange call back" to resolve it...
I don't mind paying the 10quid if needs be, but I refuse to have my DD increased by 10quid for a 1pound line rental increase.

All sorted now, it involved the age old addage of "if you don't get someone helpful on the telephone the first time, ring again and again until you do"
DD increased by 2quid a month, nothing needing paying now, covering the increase in line rental and payment of the "extra days rental" over some time also. Perfect solution as far as I am cocerned0
