Hi,
I've just got around to opening a googlemail account, now I need to transfer my existing emails from tiscali to googlemail.
Is there a quick way of doing this or would I need to go to every site I hold an account at and update my email address?
I'd also like to use the alias feature to seperate my emails, am I right in thinking that if I wanted to do this with amazon for example I'd give my email address to amazon as myusername+amazon@googlemail.com (I presume if I gave this address, this would then act as my signon to amazon - as per a regular email add).
If I went down the alias route, how are the replies sent? would they be sent as from myusername+amazon@googlemail.com or would it be the actual email address myusername@googlemail.com?
As you can tell I'm not up to speed with the googlemail features so thanks for info you can provide.
Cheers.

There isn't a quick way I'm afraid. You can however continue to use your Tiscali address, and have GMail pick them up for you. Check out the 'Settings' tab, then 'Accounts'.
You can use aliases as you described.
Replies would go to account@ rather than account+alias@ but this is not an issue as GMail 'threads' replies into the original email.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Cheers LSE,
Regarding the replies I meant that given as I'll have registered my email at the website as account+alias@ is this how my address will show to them if I respond to anything they send me.
Just wondering if it would cause problems if I then sent emails to them from account@ when they will have me registered as account+alias@.

Ah right. It might cause problems, but most email tracking software uses tokens in the subject or text itself, rather than the email address. e.g.
Subject: [XJSKA29381] My Account Query
Their system latches onto the bits inbetween the []'s rather than your From: address.
I do this.. and in 5 years of using gmail never had an issue. It's not an issue. Don't worry about it

I think I'm getting to grips with it a little now.
However, I've been trying to use alias mail names when signing up to a couple of newsletters etc but the site has rejected saying email add not recognised or please enter a valid email add.
Anyone else come across this?
Thanks.0 -
Probably their script for recognising the email format is throwing a wobbler on the + as it is unusual for this to appear in an email address.
There are easier ways to segregate emails in gmail - you can set up rules to apply your own defined labels for instance or just apply them manually. In fact the search works so well it is very easy to find old mail without doing anything special.
I've had gmail from way back in the days when you needed an invite and never bothered with this form of identification. The only time I can see it being much use is to identify the source of spam but the gmail spam filter is so good I don't worry about it these days as I rarely ever see any in the inbox despite receiving plenty (I run a number of websites so have quite a few email adresses and run them all through gmail)0 -
You can also use your.account.name@gmail or y.o.u.r.account.n.a.me@gmail
ie place dots anywhere in the address for your different newsletters.0 -
