That would of been accessed from when you fill in your details with the contact centre, we call it CMS, that information is then 'pulled' by the processing centre for them to process your claim, we then loose all the information.

Ah okay, thanks. I'd never given them the info so was surprised it was all there - made me wonder why tax credits etc couldn't give me the info rather than me having to contact the local tax office to give it to them! Anyway sorry for going off topic...

Also, OP make sure you put an application in for housing and council tax benefit pronto (if you haven't already done so) - preferably via the JobCentre as they won't backdate it unless you have a good enough reason to have not claimed earlier. Not sure what reason would be good enough though.

I have the housing benefit form, here filled in and waiting to go but apparently I have to send a copy of the letter confirming I get JSA along with it as proof. I obviously cant do that as there has been a mix up and so Im having to delay posting my housing benefit claim which in turn is leaving ME out of pocket for a mix up SOMEONE else has caused with regards to my NI contributions. Its an absolute farce. Having phoned the jobcentre today they have asked me to go tomorrow with my P60s so they can photocopy them and sort the mess out. Ill be letting them know exactly what I think of them. As if becoming unemployed isn't bad enough with absolutely no work out there in my profession, the last thing people need is added stress from things like this happening.

Sorry about your mix up with JSA but in all honest you need to phone the benefit processing centre. The jobcentre do not process your claim nor would they know whether or not you are entitled. Once your claim has been taken at the jobcentre it is sent to the processing office. Provided you have your P60 you shouldn't have a problem but please phone the processing centre first or you will be getting more frustrated when the jobcentre staff say they can't help you and refer you on.
Sorry but they really won't have any access to your previous emplyment details.

Thanks for the info. Having never been unemployed the whole situation is a little daunting to say the least. However, if that is the case then why, when I called the jobcentre today, did the advisor ask me produce my two P60's for the years in question tomorrow at the jobcentre? Surely if they will be unable to help me he should have told me to phone the processing office as you said? If I go the whole way there tomorrow and come away empty handed ill be absolutely outraged!

Put the HB form in anyway, and tell them the situation with JC, they will then most likely backdate it. I've applied for HB many times and usually give them the proof they require at a later date, meaning it's backdated

If it turns out that you cannot claim contributions-based JSA you should be able to claim income-based JSA

Hold on for a second, let me get this righ. Someone, somewhere has made an error with your national insurance contribution details.

You telephoned the jobcentre and an "airhead" asked for a copy of your P60 so the Jobcentre staff could correct this error that was made by someone else.

You ranted and raved on this forum then contacted the jobcentre again. They once again asked you to bring in copies of your P60's so that they could attempt to solve this problem that wasn't of their making and you then post that you're going to let them know exactly what you think of them.

I would suggest that perhaps you should be personally thanking the Jobcentre staff for going above and beyond their call of duty by helping you with your problem rather than criticising them on an internet forum and, presumably in person tomorrow.

    Yes, the Job Centre.

Yes, an error made by the company they're paid to represent.

Well i think he came here initially to ask for advice and see if anyone else had been through the same thing.

Erm, they're not going above and beyond their call of duty, they're hopefully correcting a problem that should never have happened - aka doing their job. So while i agree that whoever deals with the OP won't be personally responsible, i think it's perfectly acceptable that he comes and rants on an internet forum that this happened, during an already uneasy time.

What people "in the know" need to understand is that if you don't know the system, then you're not told. If you've not signed on, or not signed on recently, or not had a problem before, you just know "The Jobcentre" and that's where you think it all goes on.

I've only found out, by reading a few postings on here in the past few weeks, that the Jobcentre don't do/know all this other stuff; that there's a benefit processing centre; that HB/CT are completely separate things to JSA.

As a client one is presented with a single point of contact - and that is the public face they present, so that's the only system a client would see/know.

It is annoying that they get it wrong - if it's all so simple how come the trained staff can get it wrong. So it's understandable that a claimant will be annoyed, because their life is in an unexpected spin and they're doing what they're told, but have no idea what's going on because you're not told... you're just herded through like sheep and you fill in forms that all look the same and it's all a daze.

    Beeniecat.

    In response to your post

    point 1)
Where is the proof that it was the Jobcentre that made the error with the ops NI contributions information? Have you inside information on the op's claim or are you simply making an assumption that it was the Jobcentre's fault?

point 2) Didn't the "airhead" give the correct information to the op when he first phoned the Jobcentre? surely he shouldn't be called an "airhead for providing the correct information"

    point 3) see points 1 & 2

    point 4) see point 1
