fines for school holidays

hi all, i would like some advice as to why this morning we received 2 penalty charge notices one for myself and one for my wife both fines are for £50 each, the same offence taking our daughter out of school for excessive holidays in school term. so do they have the right too charge £100 or should as we are still married and living together have had just 1 fine under the heading of mr & mrs and pay just £50 any help or advice would be much appreciated.

we were away for 12 days did not effect her school as she she had great results. if we get a letter from council it would say mr & mrs on one letter not 2 letters, does anybody know if we could just pay for one only

hi all just to add to the last post hope someone could advise in some little way, if you get a parking ticket and the car is in 2 names do they issue both parties with fines so as to get double, how would i stand if i just refused to pay 1 of the fines.any help from any council staff please.
