Bank charges - Abbey

Hi, not sure if there is anything I can do but thought I would check
I have never had an over draft, credit card or bank charges so this is all new to me! I have a current account with Abbey which I generally use for saving money and rarely check it, I wrote a cheque to a company on 27/05/2009, I got my statement this morning and that cheque was not cashed until 2/07/2009. When it was cashed there was not enough money in my account (because stupidly I assumed that the cheque had been cashed within the six weeks the company had it in their possession!)
So my statement says I'm being charged £35 for an instant overdraft request fee - paid item and also being charged £25 for unauthorised overdraft/instant overdraft monthly fee. Are they allowed to do this? I thought if there wasn't enough money to make a payment the payment was refused? I'm so confused (not to mention angry!)
I would appreciate any advise!

Would you destroy something perfect in order to make it beautiful?

Yes they can write and ask for the charges to be cancelled and explain was just an oversight they might listen and be kind or just meet you 50%. Good Luck with it.Regards,

If they do not refund 100% then you can start the process of reclaiming your charges
