Problem reading JPEG

In a hurry, I did a bit of a stupid thing. I used a card reader to copy the photos from my camera card. I checked that the right number of files were there but not the content and then deleted them from the camera.
Somehow, they haven't been copied correctly and when I try to open them the format isn't recognised.
Opening them in photoshop, I get the following error

Could not complete your request because an
unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found
I know it is a long shot but I was just wondering if there was any chance that I could retrieve the files somehow. unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found

You copied them with a card reader...ok
You placed the memory card back to the camera and deleted the photos OR reformated the card to remove/clean?
I have the software to recover from this on my main pc but I'm on a laptop at the moment. Someone will be along in a minute and I will look later for you. There can be recovered but recover what is another thing.0 -
other forums suggest try changing the filenames from .jpeg to .jpg0

I have used the card. I needed to clear it off so that I could record DDs end of term show. It was breakfast time, we were running late, DD was playing up, I couldn't lay my hands on the camera lead and the reader was on the table, so all done in a mega rush with stress way above safe levels. With hindsight I can't believe I didn't check....
Will try the renaming suggestion on the off chance.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -

Assuming you havnt used the card since then you could try using RECUVA to find the missing pics ~

***EDIT ~ just realised this has already been suggested***:idea:0 -
can you view the jpg files in a image view, like XNview, link > www,xnview.com its freeware for non-commerical use0

The error the OP is getting is a header error in the JPEG file, essentially the data describing the file is corrupt. Renaming the extension would have no affect whatsoever.
Another viewer might help, but only if it can just act on the data, but that's normally restricted for proper utilities rather than just viewers and slideshow apps. Most image apps won't get very far. However, using "Open As JPEG" in Photoshop could show some data, but parts if not all the image may be corrupt.
The only sensible way is to run a recover tool on the card to see what can be gleened.0
