NHS interview today! scared to death!!!!!!!!!!

hi all, hope everyone is well. Today i have a job interview for a maternity care assistant position. for the last 10 years i have been a full time mum/housewife, i am so nervous about today. i have 4 children, and this job would be ideal for me, as i would for the job! i am worried about what kind of questions they will ask, i have researched the job description etc, and i am confident that i can do the job, and i am generally a lively, bubbly and confident person, but i am afraid i will get alll nervous and mumbly in the interview, and the real me won't be seen lol!!!!!! GOD, I AM TERRIFIED! also, i was sent a medical questionnaire and a list of ID i need to bring, but i haven't got everything they are asking for:confused: i hope that wont affect my interview. i have most documents, but they are in specific categories I.E. 3 from group A, 4 from group B etc but mine are a mixture from A-D. i was hoping someone has had interviews with NHS and they could advise me about the intterview, also wondering do you find out straight away if you are succesful? thanks for listening to me rabbling on!!!!! mish.x

  • Chill... sounds like you've gotten plenty of experience with your 4!
You probably won't find out straight away but they should tell you when to expect to be contacted by. If they don't, it's okay to ask, infact it can look good that you're keen.

Just take the documents you have and say why you don't have the others (don't make an excuse just be concise and honest).

Most people are nervous at interviews and they will make allowances for this, good interviewers should also try to put you at ease by asking some easy questions too. My top tip would be to answer the question then stop. People have a tendancy in interviews to continue answering the question elaborating futher and rambling. Just answer it then stop, even if there's a slightly awkward silence. If they want you to give more they'll prompt, if you've satisfied them, they'll move on to the next question.

    Best of luck.

    Hi madmish :hello:

I had my interview with the NHS back in January and like you I was so nervous! I have always been quite good in interviews but that was because I was going for jobs in a field in which I had a lot of knowledge, so this was a complete career change for me.

First of all, don't be nervous - the interviewers I'm sure will be friendly and make you very welcome, they won't be trying to 'catch you out' on anything so just be yourself and relax and enjoy their company.

Generally, you will find out whether you have the job very soon after the interview. In my case I had the interview at 12 noon and by 2pm I knew I had the job! There had been 3 of us shortlisted at the end of the interviews and, although I had no NHS experience and the other two had, I got the job! The other ladies were offered positions elsewhere. 18 people were interviewed in total for my job.

I went for another interview with the NHS previously and, again, was made very welcome but I was even more nervous that time! I had a phone call the next day to say to say that I hadn't got the job, but it had been between me and another lady and she got it because she had NHS experience.

It can be difficult to get employment with the NHS but once you are in it can lead to other positions which come up.

    What paperwork are you missing?

  • Hi Madmish,

Well done for getting the interview, I think that in itself now days is a major achievement.

You have researched the role etc so that is a great start as they will perhaps ask you what you understand of the role, and other questions that come along you can tailor the answers to the job description.

I think a major point to get in is the importance of confidentiality, it worked well in my interview. As regards to how soon you hear i think it can depend on each individual role and whether the place is already vacant etc

I had an interview with them for Admin post on Thursday last week then got offered the job by phone on Monday morning. A previous interview I have been to, it took 3 weeks for them to send me the email to say I have not been successful.

Take a deep breath and try and keep calm (easier said than done I know) and the very best of luck.

hi, thanks for the replies, i am much more calmer now, i think i woke up this morning and just began to panic!!!!! the paper work missing is i dont have a driving licence, or an original birth certificate, so therefore they want loads of different proof of address etc, all our utility bills are in my husbands name, as is our tennancy agreement etc. i have a passport, bank statement, tax credits letter and a catalogue statement. hopefully, they will be acceptable! I haven't worked for over 10 years and i am very keen to retuen to work, my kids are 11,8,6 and 2 and i love them to bits, but it feels like it's the right time to start doing something for myself. This job is ideal, and with the opportunities available for training etc, it just makes it more appealing!!! thanks for the advicem, my interview is at 3.05pm so i will give you an update later.

good luck hun you'll be fine! just stay calm and be youself, i work for the NHS myself and i have had 3 interviews resulting in job offers from them, generally they all asked a question regarding confidentiality, ie what I understand confidentiality to be and why it is important, they may give you a senario and ask you how you would deal with it. Also they asked about equality and diversity, they asked what this meant to me and also asked me to list forms of discrimination, ie age, sex, religion the more detail you put in your answers the better.

the majority of it is common sense, just try not to think to much into it and answer straight to the point, if you are unsure of a question ask them to explain further.

good luck and let us know how you get on xx :)

  • Hi there,

I had an interview with the NHS in West Lothian last week and I found out I had the job about four hours later :j

Regarding ID documentation, I am not sure if this differs from county to county but I understood from the list I was sent that they required one item from List A (i.e. Passport or driving licence - basically to prove that you have a right to work in the UK) and one from List B which was to confirm your current address (i.e. bank statement or phone bill). I know that there were a few examples of certain combinations of documents which would be acceptable but I didn't have to produce anything more than a passport and a bill so hopefully they will not be looking for screeds of paperwork from you lol

Good luck with the interview - I was just as scared as I also had no NHS experience but found the interviewers very friendly and it was more like a chat than an interrogation!

I had an interview with the NHS on Tuesday but I didn't get it because there was someone with more NHS experience. Story of my life tbh.
