Just had me new smart meter installed... Thoughts

Had my smart meter installed by british gas 3 days ago. At first i thought it was a good idea. The traffic light system is a simple way of looking at the amount of electric you use...BUT... My average quarterly bill is about £100/£120 tops. Now from the display I'm using on average £4 a day in electric. So over the quarter thats works out as way more than my normal bill. I've changed nothing electric wise. Computer and router are on 24/7 as normal. I dont understand if I'm still using the same things at the same time how come it's showing me it's costing more. I know I've only had it for 3 days so maybe i've gotta let it pan out over the next couple of months. I'm wondering know how much power the actual display unit is using/costing me.

Anybody else have one installed and thoughts on this

cheers

Tim

Didn't know British Gas did Smart metering for domestic users, can you post a picture/link to what you have.
You need to measure how many Kwh you are using per day.

I'm just on the standard tarriff/rate. No special offers or anything. The kwh price always changes depending on how much i'm using.

Since Monday i've used 28.5 kwh. Says in booklet that average house will use 125kwh in the first 2 weeks of their billing period. It does also say that any discounts will be added on the bill and are not shown on the display. At work at the mo but will post pics of the 2 meters and display unit.

    cheers

Cheers I'd be interested as I'm currently with BG for electricity.

I'm a fairly low user, and use between 35 and 45 KwH per week.

For the last few months BG has been trialling Smart meters. I believe I read they have now installed 50,000 and are continuing over the next couple of years rolling them out. They are targeting specific areas at the moment as staff were asked to take part in the trials. As they were not yet using my area I will have to wait my turn.

I believe that they are the way of the future as the one BG are installing will be able to do a lot more than send reads from the meter although not immediately.

think i'm just gonna have to wait until my first bill arrives to compare with old bills. These new meters tho do make ya think more about what ya using, I even started switching my comp of now in the day!!!!

Thanks for the picture, was wondering what they will look like. What area are you in? I ask as they don't seem to have started fitting them in my area yet (hydro), is it part of a trial fit or have they started fitting them to all houses.

I'm in the east midlands, Leicester. Dont think it was is a trail as nothing was mentioned. Just got a call saying that my meters need changing so can we come round and fit these smart meters. Dont know if any other houses on my road have had them done.

    cheers
