Abbey Overdraft...

I will try to keep my story short and it's not so much to do with reclaiming but it's on par.

Basically I had an account with Abbey and I wanted to open a student account September 2008. I applied and was unsuccesful, they told me this. However, the next fortnight I checked my account and I had an available overdraft of £1000. So in the end I was given a student account.

I used the overdraft to live off and as I was not working I had no funds going in to my account.

I moved into student accomodation and stupidly I presumed because it was around the same time my account was registered at my student halls. Until January when I tried to use the account they had blocked it. I went into the branch and they said that because I wasn't using the account they had removed my overdraft facility and they wanted to have the £1000 back asap... Well I couldn't afford to pay it back on the spot and I insisted that because I had recently found work (I have 2 accounts, the other with HSBC) I would pay £100 into the account and then continue to have my wages paid into the bank and then use the account. - They refused this, even tough I paid in £100.

Anyway, my main intention was to pay off the £1000 with my June Bursary and wages from summer work. I just wondered about this because,

Firstly they refused to offer me an overdraft,so surely no contract/agreement exists for them changing their mind? No contract can exist if they rejected me then accepted me???

Also I attempted to set up a payment plan but they point blank refused me??

They said it was in the small print that I had not used the account so they wanted the money back, but to be honest I'm a student the overdraft was meant to last me through uni and I thought that seeing as I was going to be there for 3 years I could chip away at it bit by bit??

Most student account states that it should be used as your main account however by not doing so they have classed it as dormant and removed the overdraft.
Are you now being charged though?
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
