How to secure an external hard drive?

I want to either create a backup or an image of my hard drive onto an external hard drive. Is there a way of securing or adding a password to an external hard drive or one of it's partition which prevents anyone from accessing it?

as far as i know you can password the partition, but you can partition the folders or even encrypt all the data so if it was taken off its useless to them. truecrypt is ment to be good

Encrypt the entire drive with Truecrypt, by far the best and most secure solution.

Or you can just create a container file, which is encrypted, then mount with Truecrypt. You can also create hidden volumes with Truecrypt which are about as secure as anything can get.
