Playing the banks at their own game ... !!

In brief my son was charged nearly £400.00 for an oversight of just £1.00 .

Nat West refused to close the account , & continued to apply charges even though he had set up a new account with another bank , and no funds where being deposited .

After numerous calls we decided to wait until the threatening letters arrived .

The first arrived 3 weeks ago threatening court action . I decided rather than fight the action to tell them that "he had no intention of paying , now or in future , and strongly recommended they pursue court action .

A letter recieved from them today, says that they will close the account , within 14 days , and all charges will written off .

I dont know if this will help anyone , but if you have charges, change accounts , then see if they take you to court .. I think not .

NB Only applies to those who have a minimum charge , and not reclaiming

It was an overspend on his card . which the bank allowed St.. It has been ongoing since sept 2006 in fact .

I dont suppose it would matter if it was a DD , or overspend , the point is , that Nat West wouldnt pursue court action .

Its not about the bank allowing the transactions its the retailers they have floor limits.

If your son had contacted them when the first charge was applied then it wouldnt have run into so much debt for the sake of £1.00.

Its okay changing accounts but its if they get one once all the adverse data has gone on there credit file etc. (im presuming they already had one)

They will either sell the debt on or issue a ccj one or the other.

But if they have written the debt of then its fine. Id just tell your son to manage there money more Effectively in future.

Sure I know , he did contact the bank , they wouldnt move. the debit is written off , and yes we checked no adverse credit report.

I spoke to Nat West, with my sons permission , because I was concerned about the same thing . I was told that as the debit was cleared , as in the refund , then nothing would remain on file , with any credit agency .. do you work for them St ? :)

Yeah thats right if they have refunded the charges to clear the debt then thats fine. However, if they had written off the debt without refunding the charges etc it would have gone on there credit file.

Yeah I work for natwest dont hold it against me its a job lol

At the end of the day we all need to make money

i just think its a shame when ppl wont go out of their way to help others

for example lloyds wont send a written arrangement to repay my overdraft with them until i actually take out this arrangement with them which i find rude and unlawful

Yeah I agree its always better to be able to sit down and read documents at your own leisure. However in situations like yours they would read scripts to you then if you agree then its taken as a verbal agreement. As you can imagine in banking all calls are recorded for FSA requirements etc.

You may want to go into a branch and do it if they permit you to do so. Then generally they would print off documents for you to read and sign.
