Easy jet will let you take a car seat on board but you have to pay for the seat. I would not put a car seat in the hold as they are easilyy damaged,, even a hairline fracture that you may not be able to see is dangerous, also they are sensitive to temperature and the hold gets cold, a car seat should always bee stored at room temperature to avoid the plastic cracking, this can result in the car seat literally crumbling in an accident.

I was unable to take my young son in a taxi in the UK without a car seat so I think you will find the same in France or Spain.

I'd say hire a car and a car seat, if you don't want to hire the seat from car company there are often companies in larger cities that hire out lots of different baby equiptment to people traveling, they tend to offer the most up to date car seats. I 'd suggest having a look into them.

thanks everyone. to be honest I hadn't even thought of taking our own car seat with us. However to have to purchase an extra seat when we are pretty skint wouldn't really be viable. I think another holiday at home will be more likely than a trip abroad this year...

That's strange - I was told by our local firm that taxi's are exempt from the car seat law - perhaps it depends on the firm

surely they can't be that sensitive to temperature, as they are meant to be 'stored' in cars? When not being driven, it is rarely room temperature in there.

I do take a baby car seat when going abroad. I got one off freecycle just for that purpose. Although there is the possibility it may be damaged in plane hold, atleast I know how to use it & it (even after several journeys) seems to be in better condition than those found in the average car hire or taxi. Whenever I've put it in the hold, it goes in to the oversize baggage counter, & is brought out by hand with the buggies on arrival.

It does depend on area, if your tocal taxis are PCO registered then you do not have to use a car seat  It compleatly baffles me, i mean when i get in a taxi im even more aware of what the driver is doing as they tend be rubbish driver!

Why don't you look at a cheap package holiday to either Spain or France with coach transfers from airport to resort, and everything you need in the resort? You can choose whether to be self catering or in a hotel depending on your finances. We always did this when our two were babies, and didn't need to set foot in a taxi or a hire car from start to finish of the holiday. For the trip between airport and home you can either drive and park at the airport or get a friend or relative to give you a lift, and use your own car seat both ways, without needing to take it with you on the plane.

Thanks Nicki thats a good idea. Any resorts/places you have been that you would recommend? We used to always do city type breaks away rather than resorts, but I think resorts would make a nice change.

We did Majorca a few years running, as it was very child friendly for babies and very young children, and the flight time wasn't too long. Not somewhere we would ever have considered pre-children but we did enjoy it as a family holiday. Your best bet would be the travel agent - see what's available around the dates you want, then look at the resort and hotel in the brochures and make your decision from there.
