I get fitted every time a buy a new bra, nothing to be worried about! At Debenhams they don't use a tap measure, they can normally get a rough idea just by looking at you! They take you to a cubicle and ask you what size your currently wearing, the lady then goes onto the shop floor and brings back a few to try. When you've got one on you ring a bell and the lady comes back and checks the fit! She will advise on what hook to have it on and adjust the straps. Don't worry the lady never sees you without a bra on, (my sis had never been fitted either cos she was worried about showing her boobs!!) We both went to Debenhams and she couldn't believe that she had been worrying!

Yes, thats what I was reserved about. I thought it might be a Trinny and Susannah moment where they want a feel. :rotfl:

I agree with the comments about M&S, they measured my mum as something bizarre like a 44E. She is closer to a 38D!

    .
    Gave me a 42D and I wear a 38 FF

I would just caution about getting fitted though, I had a dreadful fitting and advice in La Senza from a girl who clearly had no idea. I am no expert but a bra should be supportive but comfortable. The girl in La Senza really annoyed me by pronucing a 'perfect fit' on a bra that was so tight I could hardly breath and that my boobs were spilling out of!

I normally buy bras at debenhams but have found one or two at M and S that were nice. I usually take in plenty in lots of sizes and see how they feel, if there is an assistant about I will ask what she thinks of the fit.

I went to La Senza, where an assistant measured me & gave me proper instruction on how to wear a bra properly! All these years & I finally get a lesson on how to look & feel good in the bust department:p.

Apparently the majority of women have the straps set so the cups are sitting too low. Since then I must say it has made a difference & I feel much more comfortable around my boob area, especially as I've put on a bit of weight over the past year.:( I've started to notice how many women have low boobs now & feel smug that mine are sitting nice & proud, up where they should be & not fighting to go down south.:rotfl:

They do some nice bra's in La Senza too & when they have a sale on you can get some lovely bargains.

Good old M&S is always a safe bet too.

I second la senza, been wearing their bra's since I was 18 and can't fault them - they do lovely ones in all sizes and in the sale it is nice to be able to pick up beautiful bras in an F cup for £5 each. They currently have a sale on instore and online so once you know your size properly OP you could order whenever the sales are on.

  • My personal recommendation would be to go to an indepedent bra shop for the fitting as chances are you will get a much better service and they will know their stock really well. Then go to M&S, Debenhams and La Senza and try lots on as sizes can vary wildly (I have been told I'm a 30DD but was a 32D in M&S). Or alternatively get a fitting everywhere you go so you know what fits you in a certain shop.

Part of the reason the tape measure is abandoned is because there is so much variation in size not only between different brands of bras, but also between different styles of bras from the same manufacturer. You may find a certain style of bra suits your particular shape best.

I echo the others, in that try on lots and lots and be organised in the fitting room with your piles of bras, else it's hopelessly confusing! The shops that have assistants who will keep running out to get new sizes and taking away the rejects are best.

I would also make it a shopping trip dedicated to JUST bra buying as it can take a long time, the first time!!

I like Debenhams and Wonderbra. I think they are the best for support for someone who is not very top heavy.
I think that la senza bras are nice to look at, very pretty but when it comes to support (any bigger than a C or D) for some designs there isnt that much there imo.

I like bravissimo or john lewis (though some of their bra's are soooo granny.)

M&S were rubbish at fitting, but I like their bra's. I had to be fitted for maternity bra's at mothercare and the woman was awful, I ended up doing it myself mainly, but she was convinced she had it right and told me I was a 44 h When I'm a 34HH! Slight difference, it was only when she got me to try it on that she saw it was like a comedy bra on me, and I could pull it out at the sides, then she made me try every size on until I got to the 34 (which I said I was from the start, but she had said oh no def bigger than that! Grr) and funnily enough it fittedme, however she then convinced me (I presumed she knew what she was talking about though I blame pregnancy brain) that I should get the next size up as I would get much bigger (cup yes, but back????) anyway the damn things never were right and I was pleased to see the back of them, I'm going to treat myself to 'hot milk' maternity bra's next time!

I treated myself to a trip to London and to Rigby and Peller which was an amazing experience which I thoroughly recommend. Altough I now live too far away for a return visit I do now know my correct size!
