Hockey Boots

My DD starts secondary school in September and she needs hockey boots originally I thought I would just get her football boots and my DS said they are they same. I googled it and you can get canvas hockey boots just like I wore 30 umm years ago. I don't want to spend over the odds as the football style ones are more, but I don't want her to look like she is wearing my old boots from the loft!!

What do they all wear for hockey these days?

  • Hi,
first you need to know what surface they are going to be playing on. Does the school have an astro-turf, the artificial grass surface where they play hockey mostly these days. Alot of schools now have the artificail grass or they teach on a hard surface as teaching on soggy wet grass is a nightmare.

If it is grass DO NOT get the canvas boots. They offer zero support to the foot and ankle + when you get hit on the foot the boot offers as much protection as wearing socks only!!!

You dont need to spend a fortune on a pair of football boots for hockey they just need to be comfortable. It also depends if your DD is sporty she may want to play footy as well, but I would go for a cheap pair to start with regardless

    Hope this helps

It is grass - they play on 'the moor'!! It is a sort of park that they are covenented to use . I have bought her the canvas ones, but am regretting it, but we don't know how often she will play as my son (who went to a different secondary) never wore his footie boots only trainers. Still at only a fiver they are OK and if she plays a lot I'll get her some others.

We had to have these when I was at school they were black ankle length canvas things to be honest we only wore them for about 3 PE classes then got sick of looking like granny grunts and just wore our trainers nothing was ever said to us iut may be worth enquiring before splashing out on expensive ones :-)

IIRC, mine were canvas with plastic reinforcements? (90s)
Shin pads... they're the important bits!! :)
I was on the hockey team for a while and got sent off because I'd forgotten my boots... sliding all over the place in the mud!

Try putting a wanted poster on your local freecycle - I can remember stamping my feet and insisting on my poor old mum buying me hockey boots (they were expensive for a single mum with 4 daughters to afford)and then wearing them twice! I'm disgusted with myself now but I was totally beside myself that I need the stupid things! And that was in the early 70's! So nothing changes and I bet their are lots of hockey boots sitting around someones porch having been worn once or twice!!!!!

Ds1 plays hockey for the school and to start with he just had trainers - now he has special astro turf hockey trainers - but they were only after he made the first year team and I got them for £29 - if you didn't make the team the school just let them use trainers.

Exactly what was worrying me that they would be worn 2ce! Tried to ring school as there are various discrepancies on PE kit, but only reception is in. They have left a message for PE staff to ring me, but I am not holding my breath!

My daughter has been in high school 3 years now and has never had to wear hockey boots but i think that is because they have MUGA's here - Multi Use Games Areas. ASFAIK from my kids the sports terms dont last long before they are on to the next activities, i think they have six weeks if that and unless your daughter has stopped growing you will be buying a pair of boots every year. My son on the other hand has footie boots to play in but gets a lot of use out of his as he is in the local town hockey group. HTH.
