Separate solicitors always better in this situation one reason being that in post 18... make sure you put everything in writing (and keep good records) so that if something goes wrong and it's their fault, you'll hopefully have a good case for professional negligence against the solicitor to recoup any losses. Having said that, I hope it all goes smoothly :)

We used the same solicitor when buying our house (1st time buyers, mortgage in place, sellers already had house to move to so straight forward sale/buy)

The sellers had the solicitor first so we were given option to change but went with it, it went fine, sale probably went through a bit quicker (about 4 weeks to complete from offer accepted) and saved a bit as they can't charge for all those £25 letters they send!! ;-)

However all that said we later found out our solicitor was VERY dodgy, had done some dodgy dealings and landed himself a 6mth prison sentence and his licence to practice removed!!

Oh and yes ours was recommended to us by the estate agent and funnily enough also recommended to the sellers by them too!

Can you please provide some authority for this statement that you've now made twice?

It's not illegal. In some circumstances it's a breach of SRA rules but as Clutton (I think) mentioned previously there are others where it is perfectly acceptable.

Well thanks for the advice everyone. This thread seems to be majority against this, whilst other threads have mixed views.

In the end I spoke to another solicitors, who have agreed to match the original quote, and so have now instructed them. They are going to get in touch with the original solicitors and EA to confirm.

I think this is the best way forward!

    Fingers crossed now :)

    Doh!

My mind was (understandably) elsewhere when typing the original post. Yes I am the vendor (though I think the majority of people reading this topic realised that ;))
